Salisbury Steak with Mushroom Gravy

Ingredients
For the Patties
  • Ground beef (80–85% lean) – 1 lb
  • Plain breadcrumbs – ⅓ cup
  • Egg – 1 large
  • Milk – 2 tbsp
  • Worcestershire sauce – 1 tsp
  • Onion powder – 1 tsp
  • Garlic powder – ½ tsp
  • Salt – ½ tsp
  • Black pepper – ½ tsp
  • Olive oil – 1 tbsp (for cooking)
For the Mushroom Gravy
  • Butter – 2 tbsp
  • Mushrooms, sliced – 8 oz
  • Onion, finely chopped – ½ small
  • Garlic, minced – 2 cloves
  • All-purpose flour – 2 tbsp
  • Beef broth – 2 cups
  • Worcestershire sauce – 1 tsp
  • Dried thyme – ½ tsp
  • Salt & pepper – to taste

Instructions

1. Make the Patties
  • In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  • Mix gently until just combined and shape into 4 oval patties.
2. Cook the Patties
  • Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat.
  • Cook patties 4–5 minutes per side until browned and mostly cooked through. Remove and set aside.
3. Prepare the Gravy
  • In the same skillet, melt butter. Add mushrooms and onion and cook 5–6 minutes until softened and lightly browned.
  • Stir in garlic and cook 30 seconds.
  • Sprinkle in flour and cook 1 minute, stirring constantly.
  • Gradually whisk in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and thyme. Simmer gently until thickened.
4. Finish the Dish
  • Return patties to the skillet, spoon gravy over them, cover, and simmer 8–10 minutes until patties are fully cooked.
  • Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper.
